Nursing care has come a long way and Clara and the team of primary care nurses at Utopia play a vital role that cannot be provided by other health professionals. This includes many aspects of chronic disease management, health promotion, motivational interviewing for those with alcohol and other drug dependencies, sexual and reproductive healthcare and providing catch-up immunisations for those arriving in Australia who are under-vaccinated. It would not be stretching the truth in the slightest to say that at Utopia Refugee Health, our service would not be able to continue if not for the support, both with patients and behind the scenes, of our talented and experienced primary care nurses. Yet this work receives so little funding from Medicare that it fails to cover even the wages for the most junior nurse.
