Medical services (GPs)

We have 5 regular GPs consultants at Utopia and one GP registrar. We have male and female GPs. We prefer you make an appointment to see one of us. If you require an urgent appointment please contact reception and they will try and fit you in either with a doctor or with a nurse.

Please note, all non-refugees are charged a private consultation fee.​​​

SERVICES

General Practice services include:

  • Newly arrived refugee health assessments

  • Catch-up vaccinations

  • Medical documentation to support NDIS and disability pension applications

  • Chronic disease management

  • Management of refugee health issues such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV management, latent tuberculosis and post-traumatic stress disorder

  • Women's health, mental health and child health consultations

  • Medical termination of pregnancy ​

ELIGIBILITY

​​Services users need to meet one of of the following eligibility criteria for bulk-billed services:​

  • Individuals, who self-identify as refugees, with a Medicare care

  • Asylum seekers who are able to provide visa documentation

  • Partners and children of the above

  • Note: for most patients, one consult per year will attract a private fee. ​

Nursing services

Utopia nurses are experienced in refugee health. Eligible services are offered at no cost to refugees and asylum seekers.

SERVICES

Our nurses offer the following services:

  • Catch-up vaccinations for new arrivals and updating Centrelink

  • Chronic condition management plans

  • Assistance with accessing allied health providers

  • Wound care and dressings

  • Assistance with weight loss

  • Assistance with smoking cessation, reducing alcohol intake, gambling problems and drug use problems

  • Health education e.g. how to use inhalers and spacer, how to use blood glucose meters

  • Women's health - cervical screening, contraception, unplanned pregnancy advice, incontinence

ELIGIBILITY

Anyone who wishes to see the nurse needs to be registered as a patient of one of the GPs at Utopia clinic.​

Mantoux testing

We have nurses and doctors who are able to provide Mantoux testing (Tuberculin skin tests).

These tests are offered to newly arrived migrants from areas of world where tuberculosis is prevalent. Employees in certain industries may also be required to have a Mantoux test.

ELIGIBILITY
  • This test may attract a fee, please enquire at reception at the time of booking.

  • Note that this service usually requires two visits on weekdays 2-3 days apart.

Women's health

This service provides advice on family planning, cervical screening, sexual health, pregnancy care, unplanned pregnancy advice, Medical termination of pregnancy, menopause and continence.

SERVICES

Dr Amireh Fakhouri and Dr Munirah Mat Swadi are able to fit intra-uterine contraceptive devices (Mirena, Kyleena, Cu-180 etc.)

Dr Kathryn Winter and Dr Lester Mascarenhas offer termination of pregnancy.

Social and emotional
well-being

Utopia clinicians recognise the impact of torture and trauma on the mental health of survivors. Our clinicians are experienced in assessing mental health conditions in refugees and asylum Seekers.

SERVICES

We are able to offer the following services:

  • GP-led care for people with mild-moderate mental health conditions

  • Mental health services for adolescents and children

  • Referral to psychotherapy services tailored to survivors of torture and trauma

  • Assistance with accessing NDIS and Centrelink payments for people with chronic mental health conditions

  • Shared care of people with severe mental health conditions with other partner agencies such as Foundation House, Next Door Psychology, Mercy Mother and Baby Unit and Orygen Youth Health.
